Our Commitment
From restoring historic buildings and celebrating Lancashire’s heritage to supporting local producers and creating rewarding careers, sustainability is about making decisions that have a lasting positive impact on the environment, our communities and the places we are proud to call home.
As custodians of some of Lancashire’s most iconic venues, we recognise that our responsibility extends far beyond welcoming guests. We are committed to protecting the character of the buildings and landscapes in our care, reducing our environmental impact wherever possible, supporting local businesses and ensuring that our venues continue to contribute positively to the communities around them for generations to come.
Our approach is one of continuous improvement. We understand that sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we are always looking for new ways to operate more responsibly, invest in greener technologies, strengthen local partnerships and make thoughtful choices across every area of our business.
Where possible, we choose regeneration over redevelopment, local over distant, and long-term value over short-term gain. Whether we’re breathing new life into a historic mill, carefully maintaining beautiful country estates, investing in renewable technologies or championing Lancashire suppliers, we believe every decision contributes towards a more sustainable future.
By welcoming visitors from across the UK while encouraging them to discover everything Lancashire has to offer, we also help support the wider visitor economy, creating benefits that extend well beyond our own venues.
Restoring, preserving and continually investing in historic buildings, ensuring they remain vibrant destinations for future generations.
Creating employment opportunities, investing in training and working with local businesses to strengthen the regional economy.
Prioritising Lancashire suppliers wherever possible to reduce food miles, strengthen regional supply chains and showcase outstanding local produce.
Adapting and improving existing buildings and spaces rather than unnecessary new development, making the best use of what already exists.
Investing in energy-efficient solutions and renewable technologies where practical, while continually identifying opportunities to reduce emissions across our operations.
Improving waste management, increasing recycling and making more sustainable purchasing decisions across our venues.
Caring for our gardens, grounds and green spaces to encourage wildlife, protect natural habitats and preserve the beauty of our estates.
Promoting public transport where accessible and helping guests make informed travel choices.
Encouraging guests to explore Lancashire’s towns, countryside, attractions and independent businesses, helping tourism benefit the wider destination.
Regularly reviewing our practices, investing in new initiatives and working towards a more sustainable future across every James’ Places venue.
We’ve invested in a biomass boiler, providing a lower-carbon alternative to conventional heating using sustainably sourced organic materials. We continue to explore additional renewable technologies across our venues, including solar energy and other low-carbon solutions, as part of our long-term commitment to reducing our environmental impact wherever practical.
Across our venues, we’re committed to caring for the landscapes that make them so special. At Eaves Hall, our 13-acre estate is carefully managed to protect mature trees, enhance wildlife habitats and encourage biodiversity, while new outdoor spaces have been thoughtfully designed to complement the existing environment. By balancing conservation with sensitive development, we’re helping to preserve these beautiful surroundings for future generations to enjoy.
Wherever possible, we source food and drink from Lancashire producers, helping to reduce food miles while supporting local farmers, makers and suppliers. At Holmes Mill, many of the beers enjoyed by our guests are brewed on-site by Bowland Brewery, while partnerships with local suppliers across all our venues help strengthen regional supply chains and celebrate the exceptional quality of Lancashire produce.
