From the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales to a hike around part of the Lakes, there’s so much choice on walking routes that you can find something to suit any skill level or choice of terrain.

Try looking online at some of the fantastic local pubs and restaurants in the area and make them a destination or place to stop for a break on your walk. This can help give you somewhere to work towards reaching on your hike, or it can help shape your route.

Day trips

Because of its central location, Kirkby Lonsdale is a great starting point for different day trips. From castles and cafes to pubs and the seaside, there’s always something to do no matter the weather or time of year.

The Lake District

Kendal, Windermere and Coniston are a short drive away or you could head further North to Keswick or Ullswater – either way the whole of the Lake District is easily accessible.

This provides you with access to inspiring scenery, incredible food, outdoor pursuits and relaxing boat rides.

The Lake District is a fantastic place to get outside and explore. Whether you’re going climbing, rafting, paintballing, or enjoying a cosy countryside tearoom, there’s plenty to see and do.

Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales is home to a range of fantastic attractions, including amazing natural scenery like Malham Cove or Aysgarth Falls. Or if you want a view that’s out of this world, you can take advantage of the incredible Dark Skies Festival. It takes advantage of the lack of light pollution in the area to provide truly breathtaking views of the night sky and amazing stargazing opportunities.

You could also take a day trip to Skipton on the southern border of the Dales – a fantastic historical market town with an incredible castle. The town also gives access to the Leeds and Liverpool canal, where you can hire boats to explore by water.

Forest of Bowland

The Forest of Bowland is an area of outstanding natural beauty, sat just outside of Preston, Lancashire.

The area is home to some fantastic local producers, whose products are available in many of the shops in the villages, as well as the menus of the different country pubs and restaurants in the area. From beer to meat and cheeses, there’s something to delight every foodie.

If you’re looking for incredible views and a gentle hike, the walk to the top of Beacon Fell is a fantastic way to get a lay of the land. On a clear day you can see across Lancashire and out to sea. With plenty of places to stop and have a picnic on the way up, the area is a fantastic place to spend a day exploring with the family.
